This
medal commemorates the war for the control of Korea that Japan and China undertook between 25 July 1894 and 17 April
1895.
Imperial Edict No. 143 of 9 October 1895 established this commemorative
medal. 300.000 of this awards were struck at Osaka Mint between 1896 and 1897, using
bronze from the captured Chinese cannons!. The medal is struck in darkened bronze and has
a diameter of 30 mm.
The medal narrows in its upper part to allow it to attach to the
suspender. The bar of the suspender is plain, with no inscription. The obverse has two
crossed Army and Navy flags, with a Chrysanthemum crest above. Reverse has the legend
"Meiji 27-8 years" around the top and "War medal" in the center.
Ribbon is of 36 mm. watered silk, in green/white/green colours. Case is a
of dark brown laquer, without inscription.
