This
medal commemorates the famous clash for the control of Manchuria, Korea and other points of Northern China by the
Russian and Japanese empires that started with the Port Arthur attack in 8 February 1904
and ended in 5 September 1905 with the Teatry of Portsmouth, after the great Japanese
victories of Mukden and Tsushima.
Imperial
Edict No. 51 of 31 March 1906 established this commemorative
medal. It is of 30 mm. gilded bronze. The obverse has crossed Army and Navy flags, with
the usual chrysanthemum crest above. There is a pawlonia crest below. The reverse shows a
Japanese shield with the seal characters "Meiji 37-8 years war", within a wreath
of a palm branch at left and a laurel branch at right. The suspender bar has the four
"war medal" characters.
Ribbon
is of 37 mm. watered silk, in green witha 9 mm. dark blue center
stripe (for the naval victories) and 3 mm. white edges.
