This
is the first and only
decoration of the Independent (which really wasn't) State of Manchukuo (established in
1932 and abolished in 1934). It was quite freely awarded in the way of a
commemorative than not a merit medal to Chinese and Japanese.
Edict
No. 11 of 1 March 1933 established this medal, that is of 30
mm. black-lacquered bronze. The obverse shows the characters "chien-kuo"
(national foundation) in a wreath of two stalks of "kaoliang" with the head of
grain silvered, tied with a bow. The reverse has the inscription "Great Manchukuo |
National Foundation Merit Medal | Ta Tung 1st Year" in three vertical lines.
Ribbon
is of 33 mm. watered silk with the national colours of
Manchukuo. From right to left: 4, 5 mm. blue, 4,5 mm. red, 15 mm. yellow, 4,5 mm. white
and 4,5 mm. black. Ribbon of other sizes (35 and 37 mm.) was also used. Presentation
case is of black lacquer with the name of the medal in gilt.
